True story: We are in the middle of a huge adjustment. I haven't eluded to this change very much in this online space, mostly because I was taking a "wait and see" approach to what was going on. This change has to do with my employment, and honestly my career, as odd as that sounds. Here is the back story:
You know that I went back to work full time in August 2012, right? Well, I did. And it has been a huge learning experience. I honestly didn't ever think I would work for Public Safety again after having left in 2009. Oddly enough, the opportunity came about that I was able to return in August of 2012, and I was thrilled! Fast forward to September 2013, when a job announcement went out through my city email for the Deputy City Recorder position in the Recorder's Office. The difference in pay was considerable, and as I read through the requirements and expectations, I honestly felt that I could do what it took for this job. I was intrigued... and I was torn. It wasn't that I didn't love working in Public Safety, because I did. The thought of leaving all the people that had become my friends was a scary one. But I knew that I would regret it if I didn't apply. So I did; I applied for the job in mid-September. Thankfully I had support from those in Public Safety along the whole way, and as luck would have it, I was offered the Deputy City Recorder job at the end of October. My last day in Public Safety was November 8, and started in the Recorder's office on November 11. Crazy!
I'm two weeks in to this new gig in the Recorder's Office and I feel good. All the anxiety I had about shifting departments and changing jobs has gone away and I am happy. Don't get me wrong, I was happy in Public Safety, too, but this change has been a good one. I have a lot to learn, but every day is different, and each day I'm feeling more and more confident that this move was the right move for me to make.
I'm still going to school full time, and that part is still hard. But I look forward to the end of the semester, and the fact that since changing my major I only have 29 credits to complete before I can graduate. That is seriously AWESOME! I recently changed my major from Criminal Justice to Integrated Studies. When I was planning on studying Criminal Justice, I was 50% complete with the degree. Then I changed my major to Integrated Studies, and now I am considered 81% complete! Good move for sure.
A big part of me is amazed that I'm surviving this, that we are surviving this, and that we're still going. It isn't easy on any of us, but the children are patient, and Jordan is extremely supportive. We've learned a lot through this, and one of the most important lessons we've learned is that the laundry and the dishes really can wait. So there you have it: a novel about our life transitions. We're pushing through and things are happening.
