Behind the Scenes

If I had a nickel for every photo I've taken like this, I'd have a LOT of nickels. Truthfully this is the only way I can effectively document the fact that I am who is behind the scenes. I'm the one behind the camera 98% of the time. Soon after I set foot into the world of documenting everyday life with a DSLR I found myself a bit discouraged because I rarely saw any pictures of me. It didn't take long before I started to remedy this. I found creative ways of displaying my position in our family's story by snapping photos of my reflection through mirrors and other reflective surfaces.

Don't get me wrong-- I can be just as camera-shy as the next person. But the truth is we all like to see pictures of ourselves from time to time. Simply looking in the mirror every morning lets us get a feel for how we look at the moment, but photographs give us a chance to remember what we looked like. It is photographs that give us a history of our looks.

We all go through phases, our 'looks-of-the-moment,' but isn't it fun to look back and see how far we've come?  I love seeing life happen through photos, and the aging process is very much a part of that life-happening phenomenon. We all change as we get older, so why not document it.

Just as you and I may refer to childhood photos of our loved-ones and think, "Oh! They were so young!..." I want to be able to look back on my 20s, my 30s, my 40s (an so on)  and remember what makes me who I am through seeing and remembering who I've been. I'm not sure if that makes any sense to anyone else, but it makes sense to me and that is all that matters.
